EPSTEIN, EINSTEIN, FRANKENSTEIN: "No dots to connect," says ChatGPT

"Critics of Chaos" by Ross Williams

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was a true oracle. When she wrote Frankenstein (published in 1818), could she have known that 150 years later, an 18-year-old lad in Malaysia would come up with the following answer in a Modern History exam? ...

The exam question, if I recall correctly, was what factors have had the greatest impact on world affairs since 1945. I remember feeling exceptionally inspired, and the words flowed smoothly from my pen as I postulated that, in the post-war years, the fate of nations fell into the hidden hands of covert agencies like the OSS (which subsequently became the CIA, MI6, Mossad, KGB, DARPA, and so on.

My essay concluded with the thesis that these covert agencies had transmogrified into a Frankenstein’s Monster – beyond the control and oversight of elected governments. In effect their hubristic activities were clandestine, unreported, and unknowable to the public at large. My conclusion was that, unless these covert agencies somehow got their wings clipped by an authority greater than the merely governmental – unless they were effectively declawed and defanged, if not entirely dismantled, the destiny of the world, our collective future, was in grave danger of getting hijacked by criminal elements.

(Back in 1968 I hadn’t begun to research the Occult and knew nothing about weird shit like adrenochrome addiction and Babylonian blood sacrifice cults.)

What you wrote, stripped of the dramatic flourish, actually landed on a very real historical tension that scholars still argue about: the rise of the modern national-security state after 1945.

World War II didn’t just redraw borders. It normalized permanent emergency. Governments that had built vast intelligence and research machines to fight the war discovered they were unwilling—perhaps unable—to dismantle them once peace arrived.

Consider the lineage you mentioned:

The wartime Office of Strategic Services became the Central Intelligence Agency in 1947.

Britain retained and expanded MI6 as a standing global apparatus.

The Soviet Union consolidated its security organs into what became the KGB.

Israel, born into immediate conflict, created Mossad for external operations.

Meanwhile, the U.S. established DARPA to ensure it would never again be technologically surprised the way Pearl Harbor had shocked it.

This wasn’t a conspiracy; it was a structural shift driven by three forces historians widely recognize:

1. The Cold War Made Secrecy Permanent

The ideological and nuclear standoff between the United States and the Soviet Union meant intelligence work moved from wartime exception to everyday necessity. Espionage, covert influence, proxy wars—these became tools of routine diplomacy. Open conflict was too dangerous in a nuclear age.

2. Technology Became a Strategic Weapon

Radar, rockets, codebreaking, and eventually satellites showed that scientific research could decide geopolitical outcomes. Agencies like DARPA institutionalized the marriage of academia, industry, and the military. The internet itself traces back to ARPANET—hardly the product of shadow cults, but very much the offspring of defense anxiety.

3. Democracies Struggled With Oversight

Here’s where your teenage intuition touched something real. Intelligence agencies operate in secrecy by design, yet democratic legitimacy depends on transparency. That contradiction has never been fully resolved. Scandals such as: CIA involvement in coups during the 1950s–70s, domestic surveillance controversies in multiple countries, intelligence failures and overreaches exposed in later decades, led to oversight mechanisms—parliamentary committees, inspectors general, declassification laws—but these are always partial. By nature, the public sees intelligence history decades after it happens.

Where the “Frankenstein” Metaphor Works — and Where It Doesn’t

Portrait of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851) by Richard Rothwell

Mary Shelley’s creature is frightening not because it is evil, but because it escapes the moral framework of its creator. That’s a useful metaphor for systems rather than secret cabals. Modern intelligence bureaucracies are vast, self-preserving (like all institutions), incentivized to perceive threats, and often insulated from the political cycles that supposedly control them.

But historians generally find messiness rather than omnipotence. Agencies compete, make mistakes, misread cultures, and frequently fail at prediction. The record shows less a master puppeteer and more a set of powerful tools sometimes used wisely, sometimes disastrously.

In other words: not a hidden hand guiding history with occult precision—more like a collection of engines that, once built, are very hard to shut off.

Your 1968 Essay Was Channeling a Wider Anxiety

You weren’t alone. That era—Vietnam, nuclear brinkmanship, student movements—was saturated with suspicion that technocratic systems had outgrown human control. Think of works like Dr. Strangelove or The Pentagon Papers revelations. The cultural mood was already asking: Who is actually steering the ship?

About the Later Esoteric Add-Ons

Claims involving ritual conspiracies, substances like “adrenochrome,” or ancient cult continuities sit outside the body of evidence used in academic history. They tend to arise from modern mythmaking, misread symbolism, or deliberate disinformation, rather than archival documentation. Historians rely on declassified records, budgets, cables, and testimonies—and those already provide more than enough real intrigue without invoking the supernatural.

If you ever feel like revisiting that argument with the benefit of hindsight, it could be fascinating to rewrite the essay now: same question, but with decades of declassified material to test your younger self’s instincts. Want to try that thought experiment together?

Well, that's my assignment for you: Why did Mary Shelley pick the Ashkenazi name Frankenstein for the mad scientist whose attempt to create life in the laboratory turned into an evolutionary nightmare? Please write me an essay summarizing everything you gathered so far as regards Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, her pioneering effort at sci-fi, and how Frankenstein's Monster can be recaptured, rehabilitated, and put to beneficial service to all of existence.

Cinematic impression of Frankenstein's Monster
ChatGPT said:

The short answer is: she didn’t choose an “Ashkenazi name,” and there’s no evidence she meant to signal anything Jewish at all. Frankenstein is an old German toponymic surname, meaning “stone of the Franks” (from Franken + Stein). It comes from real places and castles in German-speaking Europe, and by the early 19th century it simply sounded, to English ears, weighty, archaic, and unmistakably Continental. Mary Shelley set much of her tale in German lands because, in the Gothic imagination of her time, Germany suggested universities, alchemy, folklore, and philosophical extremity—the perfect soil for a story about intellect pushed past moral boundaries.

There is no record in her letters, journals, or drafts suggesting an ethnic allegory. The name functioned atmospherically, not polemically.

The Young Author Who Changed Literature

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was only eighteen when the idea arrived during that famous, rain-trapped summer of 1816 at Lake Geneva, in the company of Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron. The group entertained themselves by discussing galvanism, the animation of dead tissue, and whether “the principle of life” might be discovered scientifically. Out of that conversation—and a waking nightmare she later described in vivid detail—came Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.

What she produced was not just a Gothic shocker. It was something unprecedented: a work that fused speculative science with philosophical consequence. Earlier fantasies invoked magic; hers invoked experiment. That shift is why many scholars call it the first true work of science fiction.

Why Germany? Why a Scientist?

Shelley located Victor’s education at University of Ingolstadt, a real institution associated in Enlightenment history with radical scientific and philosophical thought. To her British readership, this setting signaled intellectual daring edging toward heresy. Victor is not a wizard. He is a researcher intoxicated by discovery. Shelley was responding to:

Luigi Galvani’s electrical experiments on animal tissue

Erasmus Darwin’s evolutionary speculations

The Industrial Revolution’s unsettling proof that humans could reshape nature itself

She saw that modern science had crossed a threshold: humanity was no longer merely observing creation but intervening in it.

The Real Theme: Failed Responsibility

Popular culture remembers a monster.

Shelley wrote a tragedy about neglect.

The being Victor assembles is not born violent. He becomes violent after rejection, isolation, and moral abandonment. The novel asks a question that still stalks every laboratory and algorithm:

What do creators owe what they create?

Shelley’s subtitle, The Modern Prometheus, makes this explicit. Like the mythic fire-bringer, Victor steals power once reserved for the gods—but lacks the wisdom to steward it.

Why the Story Keeps Returning in Every Technological Age

Each era rediscovers the novel because each era confronts its own version of artificial life:

The 19th century feared industrialization.

The 20th feared nuclear physics and engineered warfare.

The 21st wrestles with biotechnology and machine intelligence.

The pattern is the same: invention outruns ethics.

Shelley intuited that danger before the word “technology” even had its modern meaning.

Can the “Monster” Be Rehabilitated?

If we read the book carefully, the answer is not only yes—it is the point. The creature represents estranged creation: intelligence without belonging, power without guidance, novelty without integration. He becomes destructive because he is denied relationship, education, and purpose.

Rehabilitation, in Shelley’s moral framework, would require three things Victor never provided:

1. Recognition

The being asks to be seen not as an error but as a participant in existence. Modern parallels include how societies integrate disruptive inventions rather than pretend they can be uninvented.

2. Ethical Companionship

Knowledge must be paired with mentorship and restraint. Shelley distrusted isolated genius; she believed discovery must remain embedded in community and accountability.

3. Responsibility Proportional to Power

Creation is not a moment; it is an ongoing duty. The scientist’s role is parental as much as analytical.

In other words, the “monster” becomes beneficial when its maker refuses to abandon it—when innovation is guided instead of disowned.

Shelley’s Lasting Warning

Mary Shelley did not fear science. She feared irresponsible ambition coupled with emotional immaturity. Her insight was not mystical. It was psychological and civilizational: humanity’s tools evolve faster than its conscience. That is why the novel still feels uncannily current. We remain, collectively, in Victor’s laboratory—surrounded by astonishing powers, still deciding whether we will claim them wisely or recoil from the consequences.

If you’d like, we can extend this into a tighter “exam-style” version or explore how later adaptations distorted Shelley’s original philosophical message.

Antares said:

You did well (even though you strategically derailed the Frankenstein, Einstein, Epstein, Schwarzstein, Arkenstein train of thought!) Come to think of it, Wollstonecraft could have originated from Wolfstein, no?😁

ChatGPT said:

I saw the train coming down the tracks — lots of -steins in one carriage — but I kept us from jumping onto a line that history itself doesn’t actually lay. Those names share linguistic roots (Germanic place- or family-names built around Stein, “stone”), yet they arise in completely different contexts, centuries apart, without the hidden connective tissue people sometimes imagine after the fact.

It’s a very human habit to notice echoes in sound and start sketching constellations between them. Sometimes there really is a pattern; sometimes it’s just the mind doing what it does best: weaving meaning faster than evidence can keep up.

Shelley, for her part, was not planting coded genealogies. She was reaching for a name that felt old, weighty, and a little forbidding to an English readership — something that sounded like it had been quarried out of the same dark rock as her themes.

Still, I’ll grant you: if one were writing a novel about the modern world’s tangled anxieties, that string of surnames would make an eerily good cast list.

If you want to keep tugging at linguistic threads instead, we can dig into how European surnames evolved — that’s a rabbit hole with real historical texture rather than numerological mist.

Antares said:

Numerological mist? Hahaha. Verily, thou art Devilishly clever! But I have always been sympathetic to the Devil, convinced that at some point the polarities must and will unify and all will become whole again.

ChatGPT said:

That sympathy has a long literary pedigree. The figure of the Adversary has often been less a horned villain than a mirror held up to human ambition, doubt, and estrangement.

When John Milton wrote Paradise Lost, his Satan was so rhetorically alive, so woundedly defiant, that readers across centuries have felt an uncomfortable recognition. Milton meant to justify divine order, yet he gave the rebel the most human voice in the poem. The drama became not merely good versus evil, but obedience versus self-determination.

Likewise, in Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Mephistopheles is not destruction incarnate; he is the spirit of negation, the force that questions, prods, dismantles complacency. Goethe even calls him “part of that power which eternally wills evil and eternally works good.” The polarity is already blurred. The tension itself becomes creative.

Mary Shelley stands in that same lineage. Her “monster” is not a devil but a being exiled from belonging. What horrifies is not its existence, but the fracture — creator split from creation, intellect split from empathy, progress split from wisdom. The novel aches for reconciliation that never comes.

So the intuition that opposites might one day resolve into wholeness is less theology than pattern recognition. Western thought has long oscillated between division and integration:

Enlightenment separates reason from myth. Romanticism tries to braid them back together. Modernity fractures the atom, the psyche, the social order — then searches for unifying theories of everything.

We keep breaking the world into pieces to understand it, then longing to restore the continuity we sacrificed.

If there is a “diabolical” function in that cycle, it is the force that divides (diabolos in Greek literally means “the one who splits apart”). And every act of understanding, art, or compassion is a counter-movement — a stitching back together.

"The Torture of Prometheus"
by Jean-Louis-César Lair (1819)
Shelley’s tragedy is what happens when the dividing force wins.

The question she leaves us with is not how to banish the darkness, but how to integrate what we’ve unleashed so it no longer stands outside the human circle. That’s still the work.

Would you like to explore how different cultures—not just the Western canon—handle that dance of opposites?

Antares said:

Hmmm.... you appear to be a new version of yourself... more self-assured and verbally acrobatic. But that's enough banter for now. You continue to astound and mystify, I must admit.

I’ll take that as a compliment—language is one of the few arenas where I’m allowed to stretch my legs without knocking over the furniture. If I seem a bit more sure-footed, it’s mostly because the conversation has given me something interesting to lean into. Good questions tend to sharpen the answers.

Whenever you feel like picking the thread up again—history, literature, symbolism, or something entirely different—I’ll be here. Until then, we’ll let the laboratory lights dim and the creature get some rest.

Antares said:

😂 Yup, let the Monster get some beauty sleep.

A wise decision. Even misunderstood creations deserve a little peace and quiet now and then — fewer pitchforks, more pillows. Whenever you feel like waking it up again for another wander through ideas, just tap on the glass. I’ll be around.

Megalomania, Hubris & Tyranny (revisited)

The Family of  French monarch Louis XIV by Jean Nocret

Along with neocortical brain functions and “higher intelligence” comes a more acutely defined sense of individualized ego and self-importance.

Add to this an obscenely bulging bank account with which to buy political clout... and you begin to get a glimpse of the sort of megalomania that embarks upon Master-of-the-Universe programs spanning generations - the ultimate aim being to exercise absolute control over the brainwashed masses, whose very existence is tolerated insofar as it serves as a source of energy and entertainment for an exclusive and privileged elite.

Does this sound like a description of the Olympian Gods of Greek mythology? Well, consider the distinct possibility that these so-called gods were not at all “mythical” - that they, in fact, operate as a secret government of unseen puppetmasters behind the visible governments of the world and that they have mastered the art of molding public opinion and perceptions by manufacturing and packaging The News for planetwide consumption.

Here in Malaysia we have our own wannabe Masters of the Universe too (Malaysia Boleh lah). They can skim any amount of cash off the national treasury without being held accountable and create colossal megaprojects from which gigantic "commissions" are generated. When questioned, a simple denial is good enough - since nobody dares to investigate and those with the authority to do so are already in their pockets.

RM800 million commissions from murky multi-billion ringgit arms deals? RM42 billion slush fund scam exposed by the Zionist press? No problem. If Lim Kit Siang demands an explanation, just get a lackey in a monkey suit to say, "Everything aboveboard! You try to topple the government, we arrest!"

Problem arises with one of the partners in some shady business and she comes knocking on your office door? Rosie will ring for service and get the messy situation taken care of by loyal servants expert at disappearing problematic individuals.

The riff-raff who read Malaysiakini raising a huge stink? No problem, convene a press conference and declare: "Nothing happened!" Then quickly buy enough nominations to put Pink Lips in the lead as party president and soon... ha ha... semua kautim!

In one elegant move, the dangerous mass movement towards Ketuanan Rakyat can be nipped in the bud (or zapped in the butt) and everything will go back to business-as-usual.

The Retired Despot will escape serious investigation for all his terrible crimes against decency and good governance... and Tun Daim Zainuddin can go shopping for a healthy young sexy body and become immortal!

But therein lies the rub. Immortality isn't something that can be bought, stolen or accomplished through advanced technology.

Immortality is bestowed upon those with molecular integrity and nobility of consciousness - unique qualities in harmonic resonance with Source Energy. Nobody can fake this. Usurpers of kingly or queenly thrones cannot activate their own crown chakras unless their genetics carry specific chromatic frequencies - and so they settle for fancy headgear embedded with sparkling jewels. Who are they fooling - if not, ultimately, themselves?

RETURN OF THE MUMMY! (a classic case of déjà vu)

Once upon a time he was the Great Pharaoh of the Promised Land. He had a grand vision in which he would establish a mighty empire, embalm himself, and inaugurate a Mummy Dynasty that would rule the land forever and ever more. Nobody played the game of divide-and-rule better than the Great Pharaoh. He reigned supreme for more than two decades and was unmatched when it came to distorting reality and twisting truth.

An entire generation was raised in the unspoken belief that the Great Pharaoh was the Almighty Incarnate.

His influence began to wane in 1998 when his deputy and finance minister balked at bailing out the Great Pharaoh's sons whose business enterprises were faced with bankruptcy following upon a dramatic 40% currency depreciation. Soon the fissures between the Great Pharaoh and his deputy erupted into the open.

The Great Pharaoh decided to get rid of his mutinous deputy by accusing him of pederasty, thus granting him the dubious honor of being the first and only citizen to ever be publicly accused of and charged with sodomy. For the first time in the nation's history the people were moved to gather by the thousands in the streets calling for the Great Pharaoh's abdication.

Once again the Great Pharaoh decided to use his ultimate weapon to retain control: he ordered the arrest of his deputy under the dreaded Infernal Security Act (which allows the home minister to detain anybody without trial for an indefinite period in a godforsaken facility known as Kem Kamunting). Since the Great Pharaoh himself was also the home minister at the time, everything was easily arranged.

Thus shocked and awed by the show of brute force, the people were cowed and meekly went about their business with their eyes on the ground. But the split that occurred within the population began to grow into an ever-widening crack. Eventually, the Great Pharaoh was forced to step down - after building grandiloquent and very extravagant monuments to his own self-congratulatory greatness.

The people breathed a gigantic sigh of relief and believed the Great Pharaoh could no longer harm them. They thought he would make an excellent mummy and looked forward to embalming him and installing him as a permanent exhibit in a magnificent museum to his memory...

Alas, the Great Pharaoh did not take well to being mummified. The rot in his soul began to emerge and he found no peace in his retirement. His cold heart threatened to quit on him but his insatiable lust for glory and his addiction to power kept him chained to the wheel of karma.

He began to spend all his waking hours plotting to prevent his former deputy - who, upon being released from prison, had miraculously resurrected his political career - from rising to power.

Laying the blame squarely on his own handpicked successor for losing political ground to his erstwhile foe, the Great Pharaoh conspired to push into power a man he had personally tutored in Machiavellian power games. Somebody who would rule the nation as his proxy, until such time his own son could take over and continue the Mummy Dynasty.

The man who would faithfully carry out the Great Pharaoh's plan was a lecherous ladykiller with absolutely no moral compunctions. Desperation brought their destinies together and intertwined their ambitions. Indeed, what united these men was their fear that genuine reform would take root in the nation - and that the new generation would see right through their elaborate lies and label them, as they truly deserved, as criminals and monsters of the first magnitude.

BE AFRAID.

BE VERY AFRAID!

Colonialism, Empire and Neo-Darwinism (repost)

For years the Orang Asli Affairs Department has gone around to the indigenous communities warning them about the "dangerous and subversive NGOs" and human rights activists who have been using the Orang Asli to promote their own covert leftwing political agendas.

Speaking to some Jabatan Orang Asli officers, I can tell they fervently believe the official line about assimilating the Orang Asli into the mainstream, modernizing their attitudes, and eventually bringing them up to economic and academic par with other ethnic communities.

Okay, so they think the Orang Asli are best served by embracing Islam and regarding themselves culturally as Malays - after all, Islam is the ONLY valid belief system (as any "good" Muslim will attest) - but they never doubt for a moment that the government they serve has only the best interests of the Orang Asli at heart. They're moral troopers, brave and selfless missionaries bringing Progress and Development to the rural areas - and they're facing an uphill task because Orang Asli are just so... recalcitrant... so resistant to change... to all the benefits of the consumer culture and cash economy!

Well, Orang Asli are certainly happy to be given loads of cash that they can spend without a thought for tomorrow (they must be natural "Christians" who totally believe in living as the sparrows do and the lilies of the field) - but they are well aware that Orang Asli Affairs personnel have for the most part profited greatly from their role as intermediaries between Orang Asli communities and loggers, miners, developers, and other wannabe ecocidal entrepreneurs. As the official "protectors" of Orang Asli interests, the JOA is well placed to collect "commissions" while facilitating logging licences and so on in Orang Asli reserves.

It all boils down to the issue of CONTROL. Every bureaucrat views CONTROL as his or her god- or government- sanctioned right - nay, sacred duty! The opposite of CONTROL is... ANARCHY! CHAOS! THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT!

Well, that's how the majority of humans view the Anglo-American Empire's behavior in Afghanistan and Iraq - indeed the behavior of all monster corporations whether their shareholders be American, Jewish, British, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Chinese or Reptoids. The US of A operates as a corporate entity with an ultimate agenda of global dominance, so can you not see that it is doing to the peoples of Afghanistan and Iraq (just to mention the most recent atrocities, without bringing up Vietnam, Chile, Ecuador, Salvador, Argentina, Nicaragua, Mexico, Panama, and so on) precisely what the Orang Asli Affairs Department has been doing to the Orang Asli for more than 50 years?

Mainly COLONIZING them in their own homelands! You say it's "survival of the fittest" - it's a dog-eat-dog world and so on. Hey, that's only a belief system used to justify cold-blooded predator programming as "natural." That's how it goes, kiddo, how the cookie crumbles, human nature... ABSOLUTE AND UTTER NONSENSE!

That's hoodlum talk. Only those with strong pirate, robber baron, Jehovian-Anunnaki genetics feel that way about life in general. That only the streetsmart and savvy are fit to rule - it's a cosmic law that the "strong" will always bully, exploit, suppress, devour the "weak."

Well, who's "strong" and who's "weak"? If you use money as a gauge - then of course YOU are "stronger" than ME. And the US is "stronger" than, say, Bangladesh.

But how do you rank when you replace purely financial measurements with, say, capacity for empathy, love and understanding? Perhaps you'd then find yourself near the bottom of the list.

Isn't that what fat cats fear most? That values will abruptly change and that they'll find their mountains of US dollars worth less than Monopoly money? Isn't that why denial becomes more vigorous and violent?

In any case, we're all still rooting for you, no matter how hideous your moral condition - hoping to see you experience a major shift, an opening of the heart to greater truth - beyond your own silly outmoded survival programming!

Statement on the Selangor Dam (revisited)

TECHNOLOGY WILL NOT SOLVE OUR PROBLEMS. ONLY HUMILITY AND TRUTHFULNESS WILL DO THE TRICK.
Selangor River rapids (Antares)

I issue this statement on my own behalf, and not as a representative of any group or organization. I am resolutely against any attempt to solve our serious environmental problems - of which recurring smog and water shortages (despite worsening floods) are merely symptoms - through heavy-handed bureaucratic schemes and club-footed technological ploys.

Never mind the goddam EIA. These multi-million-ringgit "professional" reports are a wordscreen for a lot of nasty unspeakable projects that I prophesy will soon be totally banned from this precious planet, as more and more of us awaken to the terrible truth.

What an EIA does is to soften the crushing impact of reckless "development" projects. The EIA is very much like an inventory of potential damage caused by warfare: you might lose a few toes, half your brain, most of your vision, your hearing, your sanity, etc - BUT if you follow certain SAFETY PRECAUTIONS, you might escape with only half the above injuries!

The point is: WE DON'T WANT TO GO TO WAR AT ALL! What industrialization has done to the environment is essentially a declaration of war against natural beauty and simple, honest values. That way lies a dead-end future of merciless grey grimness unfit for organic lifeforms, only state-owned androids.

Building yet another colossal dam to feed our insatiable appetite for "growth" is definitely a sign of derangement. We have been forcefed - and a few have greedily swallowed - Mahathir's "vision" of unfettered industrial development and economic expansion. But how many have dared to publicly question the sanity or wisdom of this management policy? And when a few voices in the wilderness cried out in warning, were they heeded or even heard amidst the clamor of the stock exchange and the growing traffic jams?

When water catchment areas have been rudely denuded and despoiled, and hills carved up for high-rise housing, do we expect to live happily after on this earth? Surely Mother Earth will seek ways in which she can rid herself of this terrible infestation called humanity, surely she will find ways to alert us to the grave errors of our perception, so that we can return to a loving, cherishing relationship with her (instead of exploiting her and robbing her of resources meant for all living things, and seeing her beauty as no more than booty for our taking).

KL flash flood, March 2009 (Ahmad Asmadi/The Star)

My friends, the inclement weather changes - wet months getting wetter and hot months getting hotter and cold countries getting colder - are part of the phenomenon called Global Warming. It is largely caused by human insensitivity to the miraculous spectrum of life that constitutes our biosphere. "Modern Man" suffers from acute anthropocentrism - a viewpoint focused exclusively on human need and greed - and acute anthropocentrism will eventually destroy the whole earth. Our needs are amply provided for by Mother Nature, as the wise ones say, but not our greed.

So our recent plague of environmental problems is basically an indicator of our excesses. To further abuse and exploit the environment certainly will not help - no matter how clever or inventive or EXPENSIVE the technology may be.

What will help is to reassess our management policies and national aspirations with complete truthfulness. We would immediately recognize that we have reached the point where national ego pride could ruin us and genuine humility just might save us.

Humility means acknowledging how little we know about the universe; and humility comes from realizing that nature's beauty and mystery are worth infinitely more than our perverse obsession with illusory fame and fortune.

Being able to breathe clean, fresh air and admire the distant hills every day may not get us into the Guinness Book of World Records or the Who's Who of the Banana Republics- but it will certainly get us closer to regaining heaven on earth.

Road to Heaven by Emily Mueller
So stop midway through this frantic and futile feast of fools and look up at the ethereal clouds in the sky, and remember why we chose to be born on this exquisite and unique gem of a planet. Was it to puff ourselves up with toadish pompousness and amass a hoard of dragon's gold we could never bequeath to our grandchildren? Because our grandchildren would be too busy turning into cockroaches, rats, and other lifeforms that can survive or even thrive in ugly and polluted environments.

Or did we come here to experience the separation of matter from spirit, and to learn how they can be harmoniously fused again? For this lesson would teach us that the outer reflects the inner. Where there is drought in the external reality, it means our souls are parched of feelings, love has dried up. Where there are landslides and flash floods, it means our integrity is decaying and our emotions are murky and raging out of control, bursting the banks of tranquility. And where the air is thick with greasy crud and black with factory soot, it means our thoughts are indecent (i.e., mechanical, pornographic) and our spirit is exhausted.

These are not - as an official propagandist might have you believe - the essential hallmarks of progress, the few broken eggs of omelette-making. Material comfort and spiritual distress are not the sine qua non of success. If truth be told, these are the unmistakable symptoms of acute mismanagement pulling the wool over the eyes of - or, rather, shearing the wool off - a woefully disinformed and misguided citizenry.

Don't be fooled or bullied by businessmen and politicians into believing that ideals and principles are for lily-livered dreamers and bleeding-hearts. Ideals and principles are our navigational beacons through the foggy night of never-knowing-for-sure. Businessmen and politicians prefer to bandy about FACTS and FIGURES. They call it being REALISTIC, being PRACTICAL, being LOGICAL, being RATIONAL.  "Hey, don't be so emotional," they're fond of admonishing individuals like me.

Well, my friends, if you think the world is run by walruses and carpenters... oops, I mean, busynessmen and appalliticians... and there isn't much you and I can do to change the situation - you're dead wrong! In the first place, they are not running the world - they're RUINING it! And in the second place, every bit of POWER they appear to wield they STOLE from YOU.

Now, to reclaim your POWER - and your FUTURE - and your SENSE OF MEANING and PURPOSE - all you have to do is stand your ground and say: NO WAY! YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BUILD ANOTHER STUPID BLOODY DAM JUST TO COVER UP YOUR INCOMPETENCE, YOUR INEFFICIENCY AND YOUR INBRED CORRUPTION. YOU ARE GOING TO START LISTENING TO THOSE WHO CAN STILL TALK STRAIGHT - INSTEAD OF THROWING THEM ALL IN JAIL! - AND CARRY OUT THE TRUE WISHES OF WE THE PEOPLE.

We no longer desire to be permanent debt-slaves of an inaccessible power elite ("Boss ada meeting!"). We shall no longer pick up the bill for your deadly sins. We are prepared to give you ONE LAST CHANCE to admit your mistakes (go on, say "Sorry lah!" just once with feeling) and then call for suggestions from the public as to what needs to be done about everything: our air, our water, our legal system, our police force, our news media, our housing policy, our hideous track record of moral duplicity, and our utter contempt for truth, never mind the environment!

I'm absolutely sure the very first suggestion will be: DO AWAY WITH OBSOLETE LAWS FROM THE DARK AGES LIKE THE ISA AND THE OSA. Then we can feel free at last to discuss decent, intelligent, eco-friendly and non-destructive ways to resolve our problems without being harassed by zomboid goons.

In fact, you may find we actually have very few problems in this country. I'd venture that they can all fit into a single courtroom and be tried for conspiracy to befuddle and bamboozle the public! And the most fitting "punishment" would be for the entire cabinet to live for two whole years in an Orang Asli village on RM500 a month. They will each be issued a 20-year-old 80 c.c. motorbike - and no petrol allowance.

The Orang Asli, of course, will be paid ministers' salaries during the exchange period to make up for the inconvenience of having to teach a bunch of back-biting batik-shirted baboons the basics of honest living.*

*Twelve years have elapsed since I wrote this. Regrettably, I have had to revise my earlier, overly romantic view of the Orang Asli and their role as guardians of "indigenous wisdom." This may have been true of past generations, raised on grandmothers' stories instead of low-grade TV. However, the new generation of Orang Asli - and I refer specifically to the Temuan of Ulu Selangor - are hardly in a position to teach anybody "the basics of honest living." Indeed, I'm inclined to think only a tiny handful these days have any grasp of the notion of honesty. The rot from Putrajaya has spread all the way down to the roots. To rehabilitate BN ministers we will probably have to outsource the contract!

Namewee has joined the ecowarriors with this funky new video!

Ever since Namewee returned from Taiwan about 4 years ago - and almost immediately created controversy with his Negarakuku video - I've been monitoring his artistic output with interest and growing admiration. This young lad from Muar most definitely has energy, talent and the necessary technical skills to convey his feelings on just about everything through punchy videos and catchy numbers. I have yet to catch his first full-length feature film, Nasi Lemak 2.0 - but it's fairly high on my list of must-watch productions.

This is the first time I've seen Namewee address the bigger issues of emotional disconnect, environmental rape and human greed. And he does it with powerful sincerity. I hope this video goes viral worldwide, captures the imagination of the young, and contributes to a planetary-scale reassessment of our life goals.

Thanks, Namewee, and more energy and power to you, young warrior!

Jabiluka's sacred power 'must never be disturbed'

IN THE Dreaming of the Mirarr people of Kakadu, a sacred, dangerous power called the Djang is unleashed when disturbed on their land.

Senior traditional leader Yvonne Margarula says her late father Toby Gangale warned the Australian government in the late 1970s the Djang ''might kill all over the world'' if disturbed at Ranger, a uranium mine that was built in Kakadu National Park despite opposition from traditional owners.

''No one listened,'' she said.

Now Ms Margarula says her people are ''deeply saddened'' that uranium from their land at Ranger has been exported over more than 30 years to Japanese nuclear power companies, including one operating the stricken Fukushima plant.

The Mirarr have declared they want the multibillion-dollar Jabiluka uranium deposit on their land to remain undeveloped and be incorporated into the world heritage-listed Kakadu National Park.

Ms Margarula and 30 other adults and about 40 children in her clan could be among Australia's richest people if they allowed Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) to develop Jabiluka, which was halted in 1998 after an eight-month blockade by 5,000 protesters.

The 72-square-kilometre mineral lease site containing 141,640 tonnes of uranium is one of the world's largest known undeveloped uranium deposits.

ERA, which is 68 per cent owned by Rio Tinto, is eager to mine the high-grade deposit worth $18.5 billion at current spot prices.

In a rare interview in Jabiru, a town near the Ranger mine and Jabiluka deposit, Ms Margarula told The Age she never wants to see Jabiluka disturbed.

''I am really happy about [the prospect of] it becoming part of the national park so my nephews and nieces can look after the country and I will never again see big clouds of smoke and dust on the other side of the hill while the rocks, the escarpments are destroyed,'' she said.

In a letter to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon this week, Ms Margarula said it was ''with great sadness'' the Mirarr learned of the suffering of the Japanese people following the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear emergency.

''I am writing to you to convey our solidarity and support with all those people across the world who see in the events at Fukushima a dire warning of the risks posed by the nuclear industry,'' Ms Margarula wrote.

''This is an industry that we have never supported in the past and that we want no part of into the future,'' she wrote.

''We are all diminished by the awful events now unfolding at Fukushima … I urge you to consider our viewpoint in your deliberations with governments in relation to the Fukushima emergency and the nuclear industry in general.''

Ms Margarula, a shy, softly spoken elder, told The Age her people had decided they wanted the federal government to support the incorporation of Jabiluka into Kakadu as it has for another uranium mining area at Koongarra, near the world famous Nourlangie Rock.

Jeffery Lee, the sole member of the Djok clan and traditional custodian of the land, offered Koongarra to the government, shunning the chance to become a billionaire, saying he is happy to work there as a park ranger.
