"Take two tablets twice daily..."

The Tablets of Stone, Stone Tablets, Tablets of Law, or Tablets of Testimony (in Hebrew: לוחות הברית Luchot HaBrit - "the tablets [of] the covenant") in the Bible, were the two pieces of special stone inscribed with the Ten Commandments when Moses ascended Mount Sinai as recorded in the Book of Exodus. Exodus 31:18 refers to the tablets as the "Tablets of Testimony."[Source: Wikipedia]

"But... but... we're still in the Analog Era!"

Only 30 centuries down the line... Time flies!

Steve "Moses" Jobs, the street-savvy dude 
who offered an Apple to Eve in 1976, 
now attempts to seduce her 
with something even sexier...

It must be the onset of womenopause...

(That's another name for "male menopause," my dear).

Lately, I've been thinking about TABLETS...

But the idea of being online wherever I go strikes me as

rather dangerous. 
After all, the whole point of traveling away from

my comfort zone is to get away from the internet!

At this point in time, I have yet to decide 
whether to treat myself 

to a smartphone or a tablet 
(in anticipation of some unexpected windfall).

I'd like to get some feedback from 
those of you who own smartphones as well as tablets: 

if you had space for only one device,

which would you lug around with you?

Early manifestations of The Tablet...

It has been around for eons... 

It just wasn't commercially viable... 
until Adam took a bite of the Apple 
and decided it was pretty cool.

Even as the world mourns the passing of Steve Jobs - a visionary inventor and also the true-blue American entrepreneur who gave us the Apple computer, the MacBook, the iPod, iPhone, and iPad - there are others, like Debby Chan, who are less concerned with saving to buy the latest iPad, and more concerned about the sorry plight of thousands of Chinese factory workers who manufacture these iconic brand products under less than ideal conditions.

That Steve Jobs was a genius, a giant influence on multiple industries and billions of lives, has been written many times since he retired as Apple's chief executive in August. He was a historical figure on the scale of a Thomas Edison or Henry Ford, and set the mold for many other corporate leaders in many other industries.

He did what a CEO should. He hired and inspired great people; managed for the long term, not the quarter or the short-term stock price; made big bets and took big risks. He insisted on the highest product quality and on building things to delight and empower actual users, not intermediaries like corporate IT directors. As he liked to say, he lived at the intersection of technology and liberal arts.

And he could sell. Man, he could sell.

I have yet to read a single Harry Potter book. When J.K. Rowling's first Harry Potter book burst upon the reading world in 1997, I fancied myself a wee bit too mature to get overly excited about an author who appeared to be Enid Blyton's successor - albeit more contemporary and a lot hipper. Besides, the first Harry Potter book I came across was an overpriced hardcover edition and there was no way I could see myself forking out so much cash for a mere book.

A few years later the Harry Potter movies hit the cinemas. Out of curiosity I picked up a pirate DVD and watched the whole thing with mixed feelings. On the one hand I had to acknowledge the impressive production quality in terms of casting, scripting and special effects. I wasn't entirely taken by the storyline and I felt there was something missing from the mix. I still can't quite place my finger on the problem - but, considering that the Harry Potter brand is now worth £15 billion, what's my personal opinion worth?

Sybil Pillai - a friend I haven't seen in years who just added me on Facebook - had shared J.K. Rowling's 2008 commencement speech at Harvard on her Wall. On impulse I decided to check it out and, after listening to the entire thing, I felt a great deal more warmth towards Ms Rowling. If somebody dropped off a few dog-eared Harry Potter books at my doorstep, I'd probably read them all in the loo - and, who knows, I might become a fan too.
