Good question, Anon @ 1:01AM. I can't answer it without writing a long essay. But old habits die hard and the Bagan Pinang voters seem to be living under their own tempurungs and mainly concerned about getting their slice of developmental cake. And there's a lot of truth in what so many are saying about PAS after their membership voted for the conservative Nasharudin Mat Isa instead of the more liberal Husam Musa. Nik Aziz hasn't directly addressed the very clear split within PAS itself which causes others to perceive the party as increasingly bi-polar.

Nizar Jamaluddin may be the most famous PAS leader, no thanks to Najib's clumsy powergrab - but there are actually many very promising PAS leaders not so high profile, apart from Shah Alam's Khalid Samad. For a start there's Husam Musa whose good looks are matched by his sound intellect and bi-lingual fluency; and there's Zulkifli Ahmad who occasionally writes for Malaysiakini; Mat Sabu, Salahuddin Ayub, Mahfuz Omar, Dr Lo'Lo' Ghazalie - in fact, too many to name! The ones who have given PAS a negative image are mainly the ones who spoke about "unity talks" with Umno - narrow-minded jingoists like Hasan Ali, Nasharudin Mat Isa and Hadi Awang. Of coursem there's another Nasharudin who's influential in PAS youth - and he's the one who has Talibanist aspirations. PAS may be better off isolating the wannabe Ayatollahs in its midst. I doubt anyone in their right mind would ever want them to be in power!
