This post is dedicated to Hassan Ali, Selangor PAS chief (who was offered the Mentri Besarship if he aligns with Umno and helps topple the Pakatan Rakyat government). Apparently, as head of the Selangor government's Islamic Affairs department, Hassan Ali has been spearheading a campaign to harass and persecute a tiny Islamic sect in Selangor who call themselves the Ahmaddiyah. Hassan was also responsible for the dropping of PAS moderate, Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad, from the PAS state exco. I read somewhere that Hassan Ali was formerly with Umno and that his mentor was Muhammad Muhammad Taib. Methinks we're all better off if Talibanheads like Hassan Ali defect back to Umno. Enough said!

Sadly these are the "Trojan Horses" that PR parties encouraged to "jump ship" earlier, now rearing their ugly heads....at the 11th hour.
ReplyDeleteWhy are the Ahmaddiyah called 'sect'? Why are they being persecuted? Do they harm themselves or harm others? Or are they a threat to certain religious or political hegemony? Anyone to shed light on this?
ReplyDeleteAntares,
ReplyDeleteThis Hasan Ali guy was formerly with the PM's dept and also ex-BTN senior officer. Even then he was a big hippocrate.
He had political ambitions and he knew the journey to the top in umno was a long-winded one. He seized the 1998 opportunity to join Pas, knowing that with his 'ceramah' capabilities, he can become the Central Exco in a short time.
After the 2004 elections where Pas faired badly, he appeared a bit down and his 1980's Mercedes 300 looked tattered.
After the March 08 GE, he came into the limelight again as he immediately tried to sell himself to umno, wishing to become an MB at least. You see the lateral transfer now, short cut, rather than joining umno and probably now only a division exco.
Though that jump did not occur, he is actually in Pas to smear the Pakatan's image, like raiding hotels and catching Muslim staff who serve beer, etc., ban beer in Selangor, sack Shahri's brother as he was close to PKR, and a lot more that we do not know yet.
Another guy like him (ie to bring down PR from within) but in PKR is the Zulkifli Nordin, the once firebrand revolutioner who suddenly became worried of losing his newfound MP Kulim post. Even when DSAI joked in Kulim that he may stand in the Kulim by-election, you can see Zul's fears of losing the seat from writings and comments in his blog.
BN has all the trained personnel in specialist govt depts to smell rats. They knew that he valued his MP post so much and was worried of losing by the legal action from the BN guy. So, they zeroed-in on him and by the first week of Ramadhan last year, he tied knots with Umno and soon after the BN guy withdrew his case. He, like Hasan is to be a 'musuh dalam selimut' and to discredit PR from within.
I really dont know whether the Pas and PKR fellas know about these two bastards.
Flyer168 - After 8 March 2008 the loose coalition of Opposition parties that swept into power in 5 states plus the Federal Territory had to quickly consolidate as the Pakatan Rakyat. There was no time to look at the potential danger of weak links & internal fissures within the component parties. No party is spared these internal tensions, least of all Umno. But now, with Najib leading a desperate all-out onslaught against the Pakatan Rakyat, these weak links will quickly become problematic. PKR members like Osman Jailu & Jamaluddin who show no backbone at all, loose cannons like Zulkifli Nordin, wild cards like Ibrahim Ali & Hassan Ali (are they brothers, I wonder? :-)... Anwar, Syed Husin Ali & their counterparts in PAS will have to sit down & sort out the mess created by these potential saboteurs within PR.
ReplyDeleteGadfly - From the little I know about the Ahmadiyyahs, they're not so different from a Christian splinter sect like the Mormons who refer to Joseph Smith as a latter-day prophet sent to revitalize a corrupt belief system. The Ahmaddiyah cult was founded in 1889 by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who lived in Qadian, a small town in Punjab, British India. His followers revered him as the Imam Mahdi, but his claim was not endorsed by mainstream Islam. There will always be charismatic visionaries like the Bab & Baha'u'llah (founders of the Bahai movement), Ibrahim Libya, Ashaari Mohammad & Ayah Pin popping up here & there. And the religious establishment will always attempt to outlaw & stamp out these splinter groups as deviationists. This is part & parcel of monotheism - it can't tolerate diversity & must impose uniformity & unanimity on believers, rather than aspire towards experiencing the grand unity of all life.
Mike - Thanks for filling in some details. I hope to warn the Pakatan leadership via this blogpost about the negative feelings Hassan Ali's face inspires in me. One look at him & I feel irritated - always a sign that this guy is Bad News, a would-be Grand Inquisitor ( I can smell that kind of cadaverous energy a thousand miles away). I know Anwar's hands are somewhat tied at this point & he's leaving it to Nik Aziz to handle the ideological schisms within PAS. Even within one family, siblings often espouse divergent beliefs & opinions - it's a complex problem that can only be resolved when we all put our cards on the table.

Among the world views of animism, polytheism, monotheism, oneness and voidness, monotheism is overtly and inherently authoritarian and egocentric, unless tempered with a strong dose of other beliefs that it holds as 'inferior' and 'lowly'. It tends to walk like an emperor with new clothes.
