Wall Street Monkeys (revisited)

I found this posted on a now defunct blog called The Might Of The Pen....

If you have difficulty understanding the current world financial situation, the following story should help...

Once upon a time in a village in India, a man announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10.

The villagers, seeing there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest and started catching them.

The man bought thousands at $10, but, as the supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their efforts. The man further announced that he would now buy at $20. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again.

Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer rate increased to $25 and the supply of monkeys became so scarce that it was an effort to even see a monkey, let alone catch it!

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now act as buyer, on his behalf.

In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers: "Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has collected. I will sell them to you at $35 and when he returns from the city, you can sell them back to him for $50."

The villagers squeezed together their savings and bought all the monkeys.

They never saw the man or his assistant again, only monkeys everywhere...

Welcome to Wall Street.

This is good. Surreal, disdainful, disrespectful, irreverent and funny. True to form, bro. Good stuff.

  2. Nice to receive compliments for something I pinched from somebody else's blog. Of course, the original didn't have nice photos of monkeys :-) Thanks, CT!

  3. Such a sad story but surely reflects the exact financial predicament of many.

Yeah, you are right, the photos gives a nice ooomph to it.

  4. Hi Antares,

I see you have been monkeying around with pics ;). Just kidding. Seriously, your pics embellished the story most effectively. How on earth do you manage to find such great pics? I received the story in an e-mail but it had greater impact when I read it again here...because...a picture can paint a thousand words...

    Take care! Cheers!

  5. It's a hilarious story Antares. Great to read your writing again. Wish you all the best and to your family. One day I must visit your river to meditate and to swim there as well.

    Metta,

  6. Antares sorry again, not related but critical.

Hindraf is being declared illegal by the home minister.

Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar What Are You Going To Do With Utusan???

  7. It's okay, Richard. A couple of weeks back I called Hamid Albar a hyena. Now if you have the number of your nearest Majlis Daerah just call them and tell them there's an unlicensed hyena on the rampage. That should teach him to annoy so many humans for no good reason.

Someone said somewhere - was it in Malaysiakini? - that Hindraf doesn't exist as a society or organization, so how can anyone BAN it? Bodoh betul! More Umno deadheads mengamuking just because they don't really know how to do anything else except hustle for no-bid contracts.

    MAKKAL SAKTHI!!!

  8. HAHAHA! A favourite book and wall street essential is 'Reminiscences of a Stock Operator' by Edwin Lefèvre which remains gives great insights in the greed and stupid of most humans. (still spot on though it was first published in 1923!)
Thanks for sharing your monkeys with us Antares!
