Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn submitted the following EDM (Early Day Motion) to the British Parliament on Monday, 15 March 2010, and it was passed.
That this House recognizes Malaysian Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim's contribution to promoting democracy in Malaysia and peace and understanding between the Muslim world and the West; is deeply concerned at the charges laid against Anwar Ibrahim and that his current trial flouts international standards of fairness and adherence to the rule of law; notes that this trial resembles the one he faced in 1998 in which the conduct of the judiciary was condemned by Malaysians and by the international community; further notes the renewed exhortations by international human rights organizations including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch and prominent leaders from Commonwealth nations including the Right honourable Paul Martin of Canada and the Right honourable Michael Danby and 59 other elected representatives of Australia for the Malaysian government to drop the charges against Anwar Ibrahim; and calls on the Malaysian authorities to bring an end to the harassment and persecution of members of the political opposition.
It is good that the Australian & English Parliamentarians have shown their strong support for Anwar, persecuted for his courage and being a threat to the ruling elite.In the end it may be another case of where the hapless locals cannot ( or fail to) act , the savior lies beyond our shores. ? A terrible shame really
ReplyDeleteIf Obama wasn't so busy with his healthcare policy issues that he could also issue a statement in favour of Anwar, that would be even better.
ReplyDeleteAnon @ 5:30PM - Nobody seriously gives a fuck about who finally gets his hands on the RM4 billion+ MCA has in its piggy. That's the only reason the party still exists - because it has financial clout.
ReplyDeleteBadderMen - International condemnation of the grotesque sham trial Najib & Rosmah are putting Anwar through will not "save" Anwar as such. However, sufficient pressure will widen the cracks within Umno and cause it to collapse upon itself - thereby saving the nation from unmitigated ruin and rot.
Juju - I believe the US government has dropped heavy hints that it isn't impressed by Najib's copycat misuse of the corrupt and substandard Malaysian judiciary. Obama may be reserving his personal intervention for the critical eventuality that Zaki Azmi's kangaroo court forces a malevolent conviction on Anwar. Let's pray it doesn't come to that!
